âWe must leave this place.â Night Windâs soft voice pierced the quiet of the night. Rebecca lay, snuggled within his arms, her head on his chest, her body soft in the aftermath of repeated lovemaking.
She raised her head to gaze at him. âMust we?â she asked. Her eyes glistened with disappointment.
He touched her cheek, studying her face as he caressed her skin. âWe have been here many suns. My people will wonder what has happened to this warrior son.â
Rebecca nodded and lowered her head back against him. Her throat tightened with her tears as she wondered what was to become of her ... of the two of them. She was too afraid to ask.
Night Wind stroked her hair, and her scalp tingled. So this is what it is to love a man? Had she found love only to have it snatched away?
âWhat is this?â he asked. He tugged on her hair to raise her face upward. âWhy do you cry? Did I not please you?â
She sniffed. âYes, you pleased me.â She blushed and would have looked away, but Night Wind wouldnât allow it.
âThen, why are you sad?â
âBecause Iâm afraid,â she admitted. âWhat is going to happen to us?â
The brave scowled. Even frowning, he was attractive, she thought. She saw the tiny star-shaped scar on his cheek and wondered again how heâd gotten it. Would life ever be the same for her now that sheâd been with this man?
âYou are afraid of my people?â he said. âI will not let them hurt you.â
She gave him a tender smile. âI know. But donât you see? I cannot return to your village. I have to leave. I must go to Delaware. I cannot forget my little cousin.â
âYou must wait until the snow clears before you leave. If you go now, you will never make it to your De-la-ware.â
Rebecca sat up. âHow long?â A tiny bud of joy threatened to blossom in her heart, but guilt about her cousin crushed it down. How could she be happy when she didnât know the fate of young Elizabeth? Her aunt could have died, and her cousin could be staying with strangers.
Night Wind rose up on his elbow. âI know not how long you must stay, but I know that you have been lost and ill. You will never get to your Ver-on-icaâs alive.â
The fur covering had fallen away, revealing his sleek muscled chest. Rebeccaâs breath caught at the beauty of him ... at the memory of how he felt beneath her fingers ... how he tasted on her lips. She was shocked by the resurgence of desire she felt for him. They had made love many times these last three days, and she had found that with every moment she spent in his company her longing for him intensified.
âIf the weather is too terrible for me to go to Delaware, how are we to journey to Turtle-Town?â
Night Wind shook his head. âWe are within one day of Tulpeuta-nai. Night Wind can take you there before the sun rises two times in the morning sky.
